YouTube title and description checker

Count your title, description and tags against YouTube’s limits, and see how the title looks when it is cut short. Your text stays in this browser.

0 / 100 characters

Up to 100 characters, without < or >.

0 / 5,000 bytes

Up to 5,000 bytes of UTF-8, without < or >. Non-Latin text and emoji use more than 1 byte per character.

0 / 500 characters

Separate tags with commas. Commas count, and a tag with a space counts 2 more for its quotation marks.

How to use the YouTube title checker

  1. Enter the main keyword people would search for. This is optional, but it lets the tool check that the keyword appears early in the title.
  2. Type or paste the title, description and tags. The counts and bars update as you type and turn amber near the limit and red over it.
  3. Look at the phone preview to see where a long title is cut short, and read the checks for capital letters, the keyword and characters YouTube does not accept.

Limits follow YouTube’s Data API reference. The ~70-character phone preview is an approximation, since the real cut depends on the screen and the letters used. YouTube validates the final upload.

Questions

How long can a YouTube title be?
Up to 100 characters. YouTube’s Data API reference also says a title cannot contain the < or > characters. On a phone, viewers often see only the start of a long title, so this tool previews the first 70 characters.
Why is the description counted in bytes?
YouTube measures the description as 5,000 bytes of UTF-8. A letter from the Latin alphabet is 1 byte, but many other scripts use 2 or 3 bytes per character and an emoji uses 4, so a description in Arabic, Hindi or Japanese reaches the limit with fewer characters.
How are YouTube tags counted?
Tags share a 500-character limit. The commas between tags count, and a tag that contains a space counts as if it were wrapped in quotation marks, so “video tips” counts as 12 characters rather than 10.
Where should the keyword go in a title?
Near the start. Putting the main words people search for in the first 60 characters keeps them visible when the title is cut short. Enter a keyword above and the checker tells you where it appears.
