Questions

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read and resized by your browser on your own device. It is never uploaded, and nothing is saved after you close the page.

Where do these X sizes come from?

X does not publish a recommended size for images in posts, so the post preset uses a common shape. Every other size here is one X states on its own help pages.

What is the difference between cover and contain?

Cover fills the whole size and crops what does not fit. Contain fits the whole image inside the size and fills the leftover space with a colour you choose.
